Newport Scrimshander was established in 1986 when owner/artist Brian Kiracofe relocated his store from Baltimore's inner harbor to Newport waterfront. Specializing in scrimshaw, a 19th c. New England maritime whaling art, Brian is often seen practicing this fine art of engraving on ivory or bone right in the store.
A visit to this unique store will reward you with a collection of both antique and contemporary scrimshaw by several award winning scrimshaw artists. Scrimshanders represents five Nantucket lightship basket makers and several goldsmiths making miniature basket jewelry. You will discover many antique ivory carvings as well as a great collection of canes and walking sticks.
Brian does custom scrimshaw and monograms and specializes in wedding and corporate gifts.You will find cufflinks, money clips and knives for men and pendants, earrings and bracelets for women. Utilizing several types of ivory, from pre-embargo Elephant and Whale tooth ivory to ancient wooly Mammoth and fossilized Walrus ivory, Brian is able to create a unique gift that is both a New England art form and made here in Newport.
